We are looking for a Male Day support worker to join our small team in Barry. The role involves offering age appropriate and stimulating support and activities to younger people living with dementia at our attractive and inviting homely base in Holton Road in Barry. Ty Hapus means ‘Happy house’ in Welsh and we aim to ensure everyone gets the most out of their time spent we us. We regard the people we support as our guests for the day.

    Employer Profile

Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading dementia charity. We provide information and support, improve care, fund research, and create lasting change for people affected by dementia.

Ty Hapus primarily provides day time support to people living with Young Onset Dementia. (Though not exclusively) Young onset dementia is the term used for anyone diagnosed before the age of 65

    Job Role

Ty Hapus gives people living with dementia the opportunity to meet and mix with others, receive stimulation through social contact and by engaging in meaningful activities. We always aim to assist people to continue to pursue their hobbies and social activities or to maintain skills. We also provide significant support to carers, acting as a point of contact, liaising on issues affecting them and sometimes acting as the bridge between them and other professionals. We work closely with Health and social services to jointly meet the needs of the person affected by dementia. An important part of the role therefore is cooperatively working with a multi disciplinary team.

The hours will be worked over three flexible days per week on a rota basis (Mon - Fri daytime only)

Your day might involve engaging people in a variety of activities, supporting people out and about locally or visiting local amenities using and driving our mini bus. The post holder will need to be flexible in their approach and able to adapt to different people and settings as well as provide some elements of intimate personal care as required.

    About you

You should have an understanding of the needs of people living with dementia and in particular consider how this might affect people under 65. You should be prepared to drive our 11 seater mini bus to local venues. Training will be given. You will have an understanding of record maintenance and should have a basic understanding of the use of a computer to record information. Ideally you will understand why safeguarding vulnerable adults is important and why the need for confidentiality is imperative. An enhanced Disclosure and Barring ( DBS) service check is required.

You will be a good team player and have the ability to follow plans and guidelines. Sensitive to people needs and changes you will ideally have some experience of support to people living with Dementia or with other vulnerable groups. A full programme of learning will be provided. You should be prepared to work flexibly Monday to Friday and have good timekeeping skills. Ty Hapus support people with a variety of backgrounds, hobbies and interests from Music to Sport so you should be willing to ‘have a go’ or perhaps even introduce some interests and hobbies of your own that people might like to share. If this description fits you then why not apply today!
